Bookish
The Access Problem.
During the month of November, four days passed without me reading one page with regard to Bookish. I hope this doesn't happen again during the project (that four days of lost time could have been spent completing one book). This gap, which I knew was coming, and which I tried (unsuccessfully) to avoid by requesting books and trolling shelves, highlighted the idea of being in a library and having no books to read. I am willing to admit that this perception is almost certainly a product of my previous experiences with libraries in large cities and my desire to read about a ridiculously wide variety of subjects. That being said, I am used to plenty of books being available in my home branches and being able to browse the shelves with a certainty that I would serendipitously discover several items of interest to me. Now that I'm living in a smaller city, I'm limited to fewer branches that are part of a statewide system. Theoretically, this means I should be able to borrow any... (more)

Schizophrenia
A Glimpse Into Your World
For the first time today, I had a glimpse into what could've very well been your world, your thoughts, your rationalisation. It's one that I never could've known, but only could've guessed at. It may make sense, and there are no rights and wrongs, but at the very least, I would've liked to know for sure. It's true; I didn't know how you felt about me, and you never asked me to wait. I couldn't hold on for something I wasn't sure was going to happen, and I couldn't let go for something I hoped would. But I held on for as long as I could. Surely, if things were meant to be, we would be, regardless of what the future holds for us. I believe as you do, whether or not that belief was meant for us. Perhaps you never felt anything for me, or perhaps all this while we've just been wasting time waiting. But I hang on the arms of someone else now, and I am happy. Maybe this was what was meant to be, or maybe there is a bigger picture being painted as we speak. The beauty of it is that,... (more)

Jazz and Poultry
Why there can never be a cost of living increase in jazz.
A warm welcome and a hearty g'day to ya. Crack open a kangaroo beer, put a shrimp on the barbie and...wait, I just remembered -- I'm not Australian. So you found your way here to this blog and by now you're probably wondering, where the hell is the content? What did you expect, pole dances? I'm working on it! Give me time. I'm a pianist, not a blogger, damnit! Did I just curse? We'll edit that out. What's the deal with musician's salaries? We haven't received a cost of living increase since the beginning of the 20th century. (thank you, TR!) The few times I have had the nerve to ask a club owner for a raise I've been made to feel like Oliver Twist. More?!! My favorite was 25 years ago - I had this gig in the East Village -- the place was called Princess Pamela's Little Kitchen. Pamela weighed in at about 250 and was a surly blues singer who verbally abused her customers, but since it was the '80s the yuppies who came there loved it. They were like, "Thank... (more)
